One day I will know peace—

That I am loved beyond measure

And can love just as much.

One day I will remember how joy feels

And will offer my hands to others in gratitude

One day I will return to work that is meaningful,

Purposeful and fills me with a sense of belonging.

That day is today at Austin Clubhouse.

The creators of the Clubhouse model for mental wellness wanted to break-down the isolation, stigma and condescension of traditional approaches to mental illness that existed in 1948. They envisioned a judgement-free community of equals, and originally called their organization We Are Not Alone. Today, Clubhouse International has accredited more than 320 clubhouses in 34 countries.

Ten years ago, a group of Austinites who were passionate about community-based and peer-supported mental health banded together to form Austin Clubhouse. They recognized as James Baldwin did that, [n]ot everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced. They conceived Austin Clubhouse as a place where transformative relationships could be created and nurtured to benefit adults living with mental health diagnoses, their loved ones, and the larger community.

We hope you and your loved ones will join us in celebrating the power of community, side-by-side work, and creative expression to make a positive difference in the lives of adults recovering from mental illness.
